It lasted only a few seconds, but the photograph became one of those royal red-carpet moments people kept revisiting.
As Catherine, Princess of Wales, approached a set of steps in a floor-length evening gown, Tom Cruise extended his hand. Kate accepted it, and the Hollywood star carefully helped her upward while Prince William walked nearby.
There was nothing secret about the interaction. It happened directly in front of photographers — and directly in front of William. Still, the images quickly inspired jokes, comments and speculation about Cruise’s gentlemanly gesture.
What actually happened was considerably simpler.

The pictures took on a life of their own
One photograph showed Kate’s hand firmly resting in Cruise’s as William walked nearby. Others captured Cruise and Kate smiling and talking during the premiere.
Online, some viewers joked about the actor appearing unusually attentive toward her. Others focused on William’s expressions in individual photographs and interpreted them as jealousy.
Those interpretations aren’t something the photographs can establish. A facial expression captured for a fraction of a second cannot reliably tell us what William was feeling, and contemporary coverage of the event did not report a confrontation or awkward exchange between the men.
In fact, Cruise spoke warmly about William that evening.
