The Little-Known Daughter of Two Hollywood Stars Grew Up Away From the Spotlight โ€” and Her Famous Dadโ€™s Face Is Easy to See in Hers

William Turner

At first glance, the photograph offers few clues.

A blonde woman looks directly into the camera, her hazel eyes framed by loose, sunlit hair. There is something distinctly Hollywood about her appearance, yet her face isnโ€™t one most people would immediately associate with a famous acting dynasty.

Her name is Cleo Rose Elliott.

And her parents are two performers whose faces โ€” and voices โ€” have been familiar to audiences for decades: Sam Elliott and Katharine Ross.

Cleo, now 42, is their only child. Unlike her parents, however, she never built her life around becoming a movie star.

That has allowed her to remain surprisingly little known despite growing up with two genuine Hollywood icons.

Her father has one of Hollywoodโ€™s most unmistakable voices

Even viewers who donโ€™t immediately recognize Sam Elliottโ€™s name usually recognize the voice.

Deep, slow and gravelly, it has become almost as famous as his enormous mustache.

Elliott spent decades playing cowboys, ranchers, soldiers and rugged authority figures, appearing in films including Tombstone, The Big Lebowski, Road House and A Star Is Born.

His performance opposite Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga in A Star Is Born eventually earned him his first Academy Award nomination in 2019.

But behind the cowboy image is a family life that has remained remarkably stable by Hollywood standards.

Sam has been married to Katharine Ross since 1984.

That same year, they welcomed Cleo.

Her mother was already a Hollywood beauty

Cleoโ€™s mother had become famous years before she was born.

Katharine Ross emerged as one of the defining actresses of the late 1960s and 1970s.

She played Elaine Robinson opposite Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate, earning an Academy Award nomination. Then came Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, in which she starred as Etta Place alongside Paul Newman and Robert Redford.

Later, she appeared in The Stepford Wives.

Ross and Elliott first crossed paths while working on Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid in 1969, although Elliott later said he was too intimidated by the established actress to approach her. Their relationship didnโ€™t begin until years later, when they worked together on The Legacy.

By the time Cleo arrived, she had two parents with decades of Hollywood history between them.

But her interests took her somewhere else.

Cleo chose music instead of acting

With two actors for parents, it might have seemed inevitable that Cleo would eventually appear on screen.

Instead, she gravitated toward music.

She trained as a singer and musician and studied at the Joanne Barron/D.W. Brown Acting Studio, focusing particularly on vocal performance. She has been associated with rock and classical music rather than her parentsโ€™ profession.

In 2008, she released an album titled No More Lies.

Her appearance at the time was dramatically different from the softer blonde look seen in more recent photographs.

Cleo experimented with brightly colored hair, heavy eye makeup and an edgier rock-inspired style. In some photographs she appeared with vivid pink hair; in others, darker or dramatically styled locks.

The transformation becomes especially noticeable when photographs from those years are placed beside her more recent pictures.

Yet she occasionally steps onto the red carpet with Dad

Although Cleo hasnโ€™t pursued the same kind of fame as her parents, she hasnโ€™t completely avoided Hollywood events.

Over the years, she has accompanied Sam and Katharine to premieres and award ceremonies.

One particularly memorable appearance came during the 2019 awards season, when Cleo joined her father at the Academy Awards as he celebrated his nomination for A Star Is Born.

Father and daughter posed together on the carpet, with Sam in a traditional tuxedo and Cleo wearing a glamorous gown.

The photographs gave many fans their first real introduction to Elliottโ€™s grown daughter.

And once people knew who she was, the family resemblance became a talking point.

She inherited a little from both of them

Cleoโ€™s lighter coloring can make the resemblance less immediately obvious.

But in certain photographs, particularly when she stands beside Sam, similarities appear in the eyes, facial structure and expression.

Other pictures make her resemblance to Katharine more noticeable.

Thatโ€™s hardly surprising.

Young photographs of Ross show the same kind of striking eyes and defined features that made her one of Hollywoodโ€™s memorable screen beauties.

Cleo seems to fall somewhere between the two.

She has her motherโ€™s glamorous presence, while certain expressions unmistakably recall her father.

Sam has never seemed particularly interested in Hollywood celebrity

That may help explain why Cleo grew up differently from many celebrity children.

Elliott has spent decades working in Hollywood without fully adopting its lifestyle.

He and Ross established their longtime home in Malibu while also maintaining strong connections to Oregon, where Elliott spent part of his youth. His public persona has remained remarkably consistent: private, understated and far removed from the celebrity-party circuit.

Even after A Star Is Born introduced him to a younger generation, Elliott continued speaking more enthusiastically about acting as a craft than about fame.

His marriage has followed a similarly quiet trajectory.

Sam and Katharine celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary in 2024 โ€” an unusual milestone for any couple, let alone two people who spent their careers in entertainment.

Katharine largely stepped away from the spotlight too

Ross also became much less visible as the decades passed.

After an extraordinarily successful period during the late 1960s and 1970s, she gradually reduced her acting work.

Family became a larger part of her life.

That meant Cleo wasnโ€™t raised by parents constantly chasing the next premiere or headline. Despite their fame, the Elliotts kept much of their family life private.

The result is an interesting contradiction.

Cleo grew up surrounded by Hollywood history while remaining relatively anonymous herself.

Today, she looks dramatically different from her rock-era photos

The RARE PHOTOS through the years reveal several distinct versions of Cleo.

There is the young daughter appearing beside her parents.

Then there is the aspiring musician with vivid hair, dramatic makeup and a rock-and-roll aesthetic.

Later photographs show an elegant woman attending Hollywood events beside her famous father.

And more recent images reveal the blonde look that has attracted renewed attention online.

The contrast is significant enough that someone seeing photographs from different periods might not immediately realize they show the same woman.

But one feature tends to remain recognizable.

Those eyes.

Being Sam Elliottโ€™s daughter comes with one unavoidable comparison

Cleo may have chosen music rather than Westerns, but escaping comparisons with her father would probably be impossible.

Few actors have cultivated such an instantly recognizable identity.

The mustache.

The lanky frame.

The cowboy roles.

And especially that voice.

Elliottโ€™s distinctive baritone has been used in everything from films to commercials and narration, becoming one of his defining characteristics.

Cleo inherited musical ability rather than her fatherโ€™s career path, but both ultimately built their work around something audiences hear: the voice.

One famous family, three very different careers

There is something refreshing about the photographs of Cleo standing between her parents.

Katharine Ross represents Hollywoodโ€™s classic late-1960s era.

Sam Elliott became the embodiment of the American screen cowboy.

And their daughter chose neither path.

Instead, Cleo grew into a musician who can attend an Academy Awards ceremony with her father one evening and then largely disappear from celebrity coverage afterward.

Perhaps thatโ€™s why people are so surprised when they discover who the blonde woman in the photograph actually is.

Her parents have accumulated more than a century of screen work between them, yet their only daughter remains comparatively mysterious.

The RARE FAMILY PHOTOS make the connection much easier to see โ€” especially when Cleo is photographed beside a younger Sam or her mother during her Graduate years.

She may not have inherited her fatherโ€™s cowboy career or his unmistakably deep voice.

But when the three are placed side by side, there is little doubt that Cleo Rose Elliott belongs to one of Hollywoodโ€™s most distinctive families.
