Cardamom Water | Drink Empty Stomach To Get 7 Surprising Benefits

Daniel Foster

For years, cardamom was one of those spices I recognized more by its smell than by its name. Crack open one of those little green pods and the aroma is extraordinary—warm, slightly citrusy, sweet, and almost floral. I used it occasionally in food, but I never thought about dropping the pods into water and turning them into a morning drink.

Then I discovered how common cardamom water is in traditional home routines. The recipe couldn’t be simpler: cardamom, water, and a few minutes of preparation.

Cardamom contains aromatic plant compounds such as 1,8-cineole and alpha-terpinyl acetate, along with polyphenols and other phytochemicals. Research into cardamom is still developing, but this tiny spice is considerably more interesting than its size suggests.

1. It Can Become a Gentle Morning Digestive Ritual

Cardamom has a long history of culinary use after meals and in traditional preparations associated with digestion.

Its aromatic compounds stimulate the senses immediately—the effect begins before you’ve even swallowed the drink. A warm cup of cardamom water can be particularly pleasant first thing in the morning or after a heavy meal.

Some early research has investigated cardamom in relation to gastrointestinal function, although drinking cardamom water hasn’t been proven to treat digestive disorders.

For me, its biggest advantage is simplicity. It is warm, aromatic, and doesn’t require sugar.

2. Cardamom Provides Antioxidant Plant Compounds

Cardamom contains several compounds with antioxidant activity.

Antioxidants interact with oxidative processes in the body and help protect cells from oxidative damage. This doesn’t mean one glass of cardamom water suddenly “detoxifies” every organ.

Rather, spices are one of the many ways we can regularly introduce a wide variety of plant compounds into our diets.

And cardamom happens to make that particularly enjoyable.

3. It May Support Healthy Blood Pressure

This is one of the more interesting areas of cardamom research.

Small human studies have examined cardamom supplementation and cardiovascular markers, including blood pressure. Some have reported improvements, although the evidence remains limited and the amounts used in research aren’t necessarily equivalent to a lightly infused glass of cardamom water.

Still, it provides an interesting scientific background to a spice that has been consumed traditionally for centuries.

The important part is viewing cardamom water as food—not as a replacement for prescribed blood-pressure treatment.

4. It Freshens the Mouth Naturally

This is perhaps the benefit you’ll notice fastest.

In parts of South Asia and the Middle East, whole cardamom pods or seeds have traditionally been chewed after meals.

There’s an obvious reason.

The essential oils are intensely aromatic. After drinking cardamom water, that characteristic fresh, spicy aroma can linger pleasantly in the mouth.

It won’t replace brushing, flossing, or dental care, but as a naturally aromatic morning drink, it certainly beats starting the day with something loaded with sugar.

5. It Can Replace a Sugary Morning Drink

Sometimes the simplest health benefit has nothing to do with a mysterious compound.

Cardamom is naturally intensely flavorful.

That means warm cardamom water doesn’t require sugar, syrup, or artificial flavoring to make it interesting. If it replaces a regularly sweetened morning beverage, the nutritional difference can add up considerably over time.

I particularly enjoy the fact that the drink smells almost sweet even when absolutely no sugar has been added.

6. Cardamom Has Interesting Anti-Inflammatory Research

Cardamom and some of its constituent compounds have demonstrated anti-inflammatory activity in experimental research.

Human research has also investigated cardamom supplementation in relation to markers of inflammation and oxidative stress.

That doesn’t mean cardamom water is an anti-inflammatory medicine. The concentration in a homemade infusion can vary enormously compared with standardized extracts used in research.

But it does help explain why scientists continue to investigate a spice that traditional cuisines have valued for so long.

7. It Makes Drinking Water More Enjoyable

This benefit sounds almost too ordinary to mention, yet it may be the most practical one.

If plain water first thing in the morning feels boring, adding crushed cardamom gives it an entirely different personality without adding meaningful calories or sugar.

And hydration after waking is useful simply because we’ve spent several hours without drinking.

You don’t need to believe in elaborate “morning detox” theories to appreciate a glass of water that actually makes you want to drink it.

My Simple Cardamom Water Recipe

I use only:

3 green cardamom pods
1½ cups water

Gently crush the pods with the flat side of a spoon or knife. You only need to split them enough to expose the little dark seeds inside.

Bring the water to a boil, add the crushed pods and seeds, and lower the heat.

Allow everything to simmer gently for approximately 5 minutes.

Turn off the heat, cover the pot, and leave it for another 5–10 minutes.

Strain it and drink it warm.

For a cold version, I prepare the same infusion, let it cool, and refrigerate it.

Does It Have to Be on an Empty Stomach?

This is one part of the viral claim that doesn’t need to become a strict rule.

There isn’t convincing evidence that cardamom suddenly develops special properties simply because the stomach is empty.

If drinking it before breakfast feels comfortable, that’s a perfectly simple morning routine. If you prefer it after breakfast or after dinner, you can still enjoy the same cardamom compounds.

Consistency matters more than finding a supposedly magical minute of the day.

What I Would Actually Do Every Morning

I wouldn’t turn this into an elaborate ritual.

I’d crush three cardamom pods, simmer them in water while getting breakfast ready, and slowly drink the warm infusion.

That’s it.

No expensive powder. No seven-ingredient “detox.” No added sugar.

Cardamom water isn’t a miracle drink, but perhaps it doesn’t need to be. It provides aromatic plant compounds, has interesting antioxidant and cardiovascular research behind it, makes water more enjoyable, and offers a wonderfully simple alternative to sweetened drinks.

Sometimes the morning habits worth keeping aren’t the ones promising the impossible.

They’re the ones simple enough that tomorrow morning, you genuinely want to make them again.
