Stop Running From Mosquitoes — Give Them Something They Cannot Resist!

Daniel Foster

Mosquitoes can turn a peaceful evening in your yard into an itchy, frustrating experience. You’ve probably tried sprays, candles, and lotions, but these pests always seem to find you. There is a better way. Instead of trying to repel them, you can give them something they find irresistible—and keep them away from you at the same time.

The Secret: A Simple Homemade Trap

Mosquitoes are attracted to carbon dioxide, which is what we exhale. They also love the scent of ripening fruit, standing water, and certain sweet smells. By creating a simple trap that mimics these attractions, you can lure them away from your seating area and keep them from bothering you.

The Mosquito Trap Recipe

You’ll need:

  • A 2-liter plastic bottle
  • 1 cup of warm water
  • ¼ cup of brown sugar or honey
  • 1 teaspoon of active dry yeast (optional, for carbon dioxide production)
  • Black tape or dark cloth

Instructions:

  1. Cut the plastic bottle in half around the middle.
  2. In the bottom half, mix the warm water and brown sugar (or honey) until dissolved.
  3. Add the yeast. Do not stir. The yeast will produce carbon dioxide, which mosquitoes are drawn to.
  4. Take the top half of the bottle, turn it upside down, and place it into the bottom half like a funnel. Tape the edges together.
  5. Wrap the outside of the bottle with black tape or dark cloth. Mosquitoes prefer dark, warm spaces.
  6. Place the trap in a shaded area away from where you sit, about 10 to 15 feet from your outdoor seating.

How It Works

The yeast produces carbon dioxide, which signals to mosquitoes that a living, breathing creature is nearby. They fly into the funnel, but cannot find their way out. They eventually drown in the sugar water. This simple trap can capture hundreds of mosquitoes over a few days.

Why This Is Better Than Sprays

  • No chemicals on your skin or in the air.
  • No strong smells that can be unpleasant.
  • Continuous protection for days, not just hours.
  • Safe for children and pets when placed out of reach.

Additional Tips for a Mosquito-Free Yard

  • Empty standing water from flower pots, bird baths, and gutters. Mosquitoes breed in standing water.
  • Plant mosquito-repelling plants like lavender, basil, mint, or citronella near seating areas.
  • Use fans on your patio. Mosquitoes are weak fliers and avoid moving air.
  • Wear light-colored clothing. Dark colors attract mosquitoes.

A Gentle Reminder

You do not have to share your yard with mosquitoes. With this simple, non-toxic trap, you can enjoy your evenings outdoors without the itch and irritation. Give it a try, and let the trap do the work while you relax.
