Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas’ Daughter Stella, 29, Makes Rare Red Carpet Appearance With Her Dad — and She’s All Grown Up

Daniel Foster

For years, Stella Banderas has lived much more quietly than the two Hollywood stars who raised her.

Her mother, Melanie Griffith, became one of the defining actresses of the 1980s and ’90s. Her father, Antonio Banderas, built an international career that took him from Spanish cinema to The Mask of Zorro, Evita and Puss in Boots.

Their only child together, however, largely chose life away from the spotlight.

That made Stella’s appearance beside her father at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 17 particularly striking. Now 29, she joined the 66-year-old actor for the premiere of his new movie Up Against It, turning the event into a rare father-daughter red-carpet moment. (People.com)

And despite growing up surrounded by famous actors, Stella has chosen a surprisingly different path.

Stella Stepped Out in a Dramatic Black Dress

For her rare appearance, Stella wore an asymmetric black long-sleeved dress with ruching and draping across the bodice and a thigh-high slit.

She finished the monochromatic look with black sunglasses.

Her father coordinated with her in a black suit layered over a black shirt covered in a white star-like print. He also wore dark sunglasses as they posed together at Roy Thomson Hall. (InStyle)

The occasion was the TIFF premiere of Up Against It, which stars Banderas alongside Forest Whitaker, Richard E. Grant and Úrsula Corberó. (InStyle)

For Stella, however, it wasn’t her own project bringing her onto the carpet.

She was there to support her dad.

At 29, She Looks Very Different From the Little Girl Hollywood Once Knew

Stella was born on September 24, 1996, during one of the most famous periods of her parents’ careers.

Her full name is Stella del Carmen Banderas Griffith.

Growing up, she occasionally accompanied her parents to events, meaning audiences saw glimpses of her as a child and teenager.

But unlike many celebrity children, she never developed a particularly public Hollywood persona.

That makes the difference especially noticeable whenever she resurfaces.

The little girl once photographed holding her famous parents’ hands is now approaching 30, married and building a career of her own.

She Is Melanie and Antonio’s Only Child Together

Banderas and Griffith married in 1996 after falling in love while making the romantic comedy Two Much.

Stella arrived later that year.

Although she is their only biological child together, the family was considerably larger.

Griffith was already a mother to Alexander Bauer, whom she shares with Steven Bauer, and Dakota Johnson, her daughter with Don Johnson.

Banderas became deeply involved in their lives as well.

Even after his marriage to Griffith ended, he remained close to the children he had helped raise. (People.com)

Dakota eventually revealed the affectionate name she had for him: “Paponio,” a combination of “Papa” and Antonio. (People.com)

Stella Actually Appeared in a Movie With Her Mom

With those parents, an acting career might have seemed inevitable.

And technically, Stella does have an acting credit.

As a child, she appeared in the 1999 film Crazy in Alabama, which starred Melanie Griffith and marked Antonio Banderas’ feature directorial debut.

But that childhood appearance didn’t become the beginning of an acting career.

Quite the opposite.

Antonio has explained that his daughter is much more interested in working behind the camera.

“Stella is not so much of an actress,” he told HELLO! in 2025, adding that she wanted to pursue work behind the scenes and had already made commercials. (New York Weekly Times)

Her Parents Divorced — but Their Family Didn’t Fall Apart

Melanie and Antonio separated in 2014 after nearly two decades together, and their divorce was finalized the following year. (Parade)

Celebrity divorces frequently become stories about fractured families and former partners who avoid one another.

Theirs became something rather different.

Banderas and Griffith remained close.

In fact, Banderas recently described Griffith as one of his best friends, explaining that honesty had remained fundamental to their relationship both while they were married and after they separated. (El País)

He has also said maintaining that relationship has been healthy for their family.

It means Stella never had to choose between two completely separate worlds.

Antonio Still Publicly Calls Melanie His Lifelong Friend

Earlier this year, Banderas gave fans an unusually intimate glimpse of their modern family dynamic.

He shared a photograph showing himself relaxing with Griffith, Stella and Stella’s husband, Alex Gruszynski.

Rather than describing Griffith merely as his ex-wife, Banderas referred to her as his “lifelong friend.” (Parade)

It was a remarkably warm description considering they separated more than a decade ago.

And it illustrates something that has become increasingly clear about the former couple.

Their marriage ended.

Their affection for each other did not.

Stella Is Married Now, Too

Another major change has taken place in Stella’s life away from the red carpet.

She married her longtime partner, Alex Gruszynski.

The relationship has its own rather sweet history: the pair first knew each other when they were children and eventually reconnected as adults.

Their wedding also brought Stella’s famous family together.

Banderas has spoken warmly about watching the children he helped raise become adults, and recent reporting noted that the family reunited around Stella’s wedding. (El País)

So the woman standing beside Antonio at TIFF wasn’t simply the grown-up daughter fans hadn’t seen for a while.

She had entered an entirely new chapter of her own life.

She’s Also Dakota Johnson’s Younger Sister

Stella’s relationship with Dakota Johnson gives the family another interesting Hollywood connection.

The two share Melanie Griffith as their mother, while their fathers are two completely different movie stars: Don Johnson and Antonio Banderas.

Dakota became the actor of the next generation, eventually finding international fame through Fifty Shades of Grey before moving into independent films and other projects.

Stella went the opposite direction.

Instead of pursuing celebrity, she remained much more private.

And Banderas has suggested that her ambitions are centered behind the camera rather than in front of it. (E! Online)

Antonio Never Stopped Considering Dakota Family

The closeness between Banderas and Dakota became especially public in 2019.

When Dakota presented her former stepfather with an award, she spoke emotionally about the man who had entered her life when she was a child.

Their relationship endured even after Banderas and Griffith divorced.

Recent coverage of his TIFF appearance again noted that Banderas remains close with Griffith’s children from her previous relationships. (People.com)

It’s one of the more unusual aspects of this Hollywood family.

The legal relationships changed years ago.

The emotional ones largely remained.

Stella Has Made Other Rare Red Carpet Appearances With Her Father

This wasn’t the first time Stella accompanied Antonio to a major event.

In 2021, she joined him at the San Sebastián International Film Festival in Spain.

Father and daughter again chose coordinated dark looks, with Stella wearing a simple fitted black dress as Antonio posed beside her in a black suit.

She has also accompanied him to the Vanity Fair Person of the Year Awards, once again wearing black.

There is a pattern here.

When Stella does step onto a carpet, she tends to keep her fashion understated rather than attempting to compete with the spectacle around her.

Her TIFF Dress Continued That Signature Style

Her September 17 outfit followed almost exactly that formula.

Black.

Minimal accessories.

A relatively simple silhouette with one dramatic detail.

In this case, it was the asymmetrical draping and high slit.

There were no extravagant jewels or elaborate princess gown.

Even the sunglasses she and her father wore added to the relaxed feeling of the appearance.

The result drew attention precisely because Stella doesn’t seem to seek it very often.

Meanwhile, Melanie Has Been Having Her Own Moment

Stella’s TIFF appearance came during an eventful week for her mother as well.

Griffith, now 69, recently shared photographs from a wellness retreat in Austria, where she posed in a black swimsuit and demonstrated a yoga pose during what she described as a health reset. (Page Six)

The photographs generated an enthusiastic response from followers, many of whom commented on her appearance.

So within days, both mother and daughter unexpectedly found themselves attracting attention — despite being thousands of miles apart.

Antonio Is 66 — and Still Extremely Busy

Stella’s appearance in Toronto was ultimately about supporting her father.

Banderas is now 66, but his career remains remarkably active.

Up Against It brought him to TIFF alongside an international cast, continuing a career that has moved fluidly between Hollywood and European cinema.

For an actor who spent years being associated with swashbuckling action roles and romantic leads, his later career has also included acclaimed dramatic work, including his Oscar-nominated performance in Pedro Almodóvar’s Pain and Glory.

But the Toronto carpet briefly shifted attention away from the movie.

Everyone wanted to know about the woman beside him.

The Father-Daughter Photos Say More Than the Dress

It’s easy to understand why Stella’s appearance generated headlines.

She is 29.

She rarely appears at celebrity events.

She’s the daughter of two enormously recognizable Hollywood stars.

And she arrived looking elegant beside a father who clearly appeared delighted to have her there.

But there is a larger story behind those photographs.

Stella grew up inside a family that could easily have fractured after a very public divorce.

Instead, Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas found a way to remain deeply connected.

Banderas still speaks lovingly about his former wife.

He remained close to her older children.

And when Stella got married, the family came together again.

She Grew Up Around Hollywood — Then Chose Her Own Direction

Perhaps the most interesting thing about Stella Banderas is what she didn’t do.

She had virtually every possible route into acting.

Her mother was an Oscar-nominated Hollywood star.

Her father was one of the most famous Spanish actors in the world.

Her half-sister became a major actress.

She had already appeared in a movie as a child.

Yet she didn’t simply follow the obvious path.

Instead, Stella largely stayed out of public view and gravitated toward work behind the camera. (New York Weekly Times)

That makes her occasional appearances with her parents feel less like the arrival of another celebrity and more like glimpses into a famously complicated — but surprisingly close — Hollywood family.

And on September 17, Antonio Banderas didn’t need another movie star beside him on the red carpet.

He brought his daughter.
