Long dark hair, sharp features and an unforgettable screen presence made Lou Diamond Phillips one of the most recognizable young actors of the late 1980s.
He was Ritchie Valens in La Bamba. Then came Stand and Deliver. And in 1988, Phillips rode onto the screen as José Chavez y Chavez in Young Guns, joining a cast packed with some of Hollywood’s biggest young stars.
Nearly four decades later, the long black hair is now silver, and Phillips has traded his youthful clean-shaven look for a salt-and-pepper beard.
But behind that transformation is a personal story every bit as unexpected as his Hollywood career — including the collapse of his first marriage after his wife fell in love with another woman.
And Phillips himself has spoken about what happened.
Before Young Guns, one role changed everything
Phillips wasn’t born into Hollywood royalty.
Born in 1962, he spent part of his childhood moving around because his father served in the military. Acting eventually became his passion, but his breakthrough came with a role carrying enormous responsibility.
He was cast as rock-and-roll pioneer Ritchie Valens in the 1987 biopic La Bamba.
Phillips suddenly went from a relatively unknown young actor to a recognizable Hollywood face.
Then came another acclaimed performance in 1988’s Stand and Deliver, in which he played troubled student Angel Guzman opposite Edward James Olmos.
But that same year brought the film that would permanently connect Phillips to the Brat Pack era.

As José Chavez y Chavez, he became part of an iconic cast
Phillips played José Chavez y Chavez alongside Emilio Estevez’s Billy the Kid, Kiefer Sutherland’s Doc Scurlock, Charlie Sheen’s Dick Brewer, Dermot Mulroney’s Dirty Steve and Casey Siemaszko’s Charley Bowdre.
The movie turned its young cast into a generation’s version of Western outlaws.
Phillips’ appearance was particularly distinctive.
The long, dark hair seen in the viral throwback photograph became closely associated with his character.
Young Guns became successful enough to produce Young Guns II in 1990, with Phillips returning as Chavez.
But while his career was taking off, his private life was moving in a direction he couldn’t have predicted.
He had married Julie Cypher just as he was becoming famous
Phillips met assistant director Julie Cypher while working on the film Trespasses.
They married on September 17, 1987.
Both were young, and Phillips’ career was suddenly exploding.

Then she met Melissa Etheridge.
Cypher was working as an assistant director on Etheridge’s “Bring Me Some Water” music video when the two women became close.

Cypher and Phillips separated, and their divorce was finalized in 1990.

Julie said Lou eventually understood
Cypher recalled that the situation wasn’t something Phillips had expected.
But she also described him as an “open and loving person” and said that once he met Etheridge, he could understand the connection between them. (Advocate.com)
Even more surprisingly, Phillips and Cypher eventually remained friends.
Their lives didn’t simply split into two hostile camps.
Phillips later appeared in Teresa’s Tattoo, the 1994 film directed by Cypher. Etheridge also had a role in the movie.

Julie and Melissa became one of America’s most visible same-sex couples
Cypher and Etheridge’s relationship lasted roughly a decade.
At a time when openly gay celebrity couples were far less common, they became one of the most prominent.

For years, the identity of the biological father remained private.
When they eventually revealed Crosby’s involvement, the unconventional family became national news.

After his divorce from Cypher, Phillips became engaged for a time to actress Jennifer Tilly.
That engagement ended, and in 1994 he married makeup artist Kelly Phillips.
They became parents to three daughters, including twins.
Their marriage eventually broke down as well, with the couple separating in 2003 and completing their divorce several years later.
Phillips later found a lasting relationship with makeup artist Yvonne Boismier.
They married in 2007 and share a daughter.
Over the years, Phillips became a father of four while continuing an acting career that proved considerably more durable than the “1980s heartthrob” label might suggest.
Because Lou never actually disappeared
For viewers who primarily remember Phillips from La Bamba and Young Guns, his recent appearance can feel startling.
But he has worked steadily for decades.
After his early breakthrough, Phillips appeared in films including Courage Under Fire, Young Guns II and Courage Under Fire, while also establishing himself on television and stage.
One of his biggest accomplishments came on Broadway.
Phillips took on the iconic role of the King of Siam in a revival of The King and I, earning a Tony Award nomination.
Later generations came to know him as Henry Standing Bear on Longmire.
By 2026, the transformation from the young actor with waist-length black hair was unmistakable.
Phillips now wears his thick hair shorter and naturally gray, often paired with a neatly trimmed gray beard.
The distinctive smile, however, is still there.
His appearance at 64 has people doing a double take
Phillips turned 64 on February 17, 2026.
Recent photographs show a man who has allowed his hair to gray rather than attempting to preserve the exact appearance audiences remember from the 1980s.
At the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, Phillips appeared with swept-back silver-and-dark hair and a salt-and-pepper beard while attending the premiere of American Pachuco: The Legend of Luis Valdez.
The change is especially dramatic when placed beside his Young Guns photographs.
Then: flowing black hair, clean-shaven face and the unmistakable features of a man in his mid-20s.
Now: silver hair, beard and nearly four additional decades etched into his face.
Yet comments about his “perfect hair” aren’t entirely difficult to understand.
He still has plenty of it.
And now Chavez is riding again
Perhaps the most nostalgic part of Phillips’ story is that his Young Guns chapter isn’t actually over.
Nearly four decades after the original film, a third installment is moving forward.
Young Guns 3: Dead or Alive is set to reunite original stars Emilio Estevez, Lou Diamond Phillips and Christian Slater, with Estevez directing and once again playing Billy the Kid. The project is planned to film in New Mexico, where the earlier movies were made. (AP News)
