For millions of Friends fans, Lisa Kudrow will probably always be Phoebe Buffay: unpredictable, eccentric, endlessly expressive and capable of turning the strangest sentence into one of the funniest moments on television.
So when Kudrow arrived at the 2026 Emmy Awards with a tall, dark-haired young man beside her, plenty of viewers needed a moment to realize who he was.
It was her son.
Julian Murray Stern is now 28 — the only child Kudrow shares with her husband of more than 30 years, French advertising executive Michel Stern. He has spent most of his life outside the celebrity spotlight, despite having one of television’s most recognizable mothers. Yet on September 14, Julian accompanied Kudrow to the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater, where she had received two nominations for the final season of The Comeback. (People.com)
Photographs of mother and son quickly circulated online, and some viewers focused on their body language. In certain candid shots, they stood side by side without touching, looking in different directions or wearing serious expressions. That was enough for captions to tease a “strange detail” about their behavior.
But the wider collection of photographs tells a much less mysterious story.
Kudrow and Julian smiled together on the red carpet, deliberately coordinated their black outfits, attended the ceremony together and later continued the evening at an Emmy after-party. And perhaps most importantly, their relationship has recently become closer professionally as well: Julian just acted alongside his mother in The Comeback. (InStyle)
The supposedly strange moment looks considerably different once you know their story.
The little boy Lisa was carrying on Friends is now 28
There is something almost surreal about seeing Julian as an adult because longtime Friends viewers technically encountered him before he was born.
Kudrow became pregnant while making the fourth season of Friends. Rather than attempting to conceal her pregnancy completely, the writers created one of Phoebe’s most memorable storylines: Phoebe becomes a surrogate for her half-brother Frank Jr. and his wife Alice, eventually giving birth to triplets.
Kudrow’s real pregnancy therefore became woven into television history.
The baby she was actually carrying was Julian.
He was born on May 7, 1998, when Friends was approaching the height of its cultural dominance. (InStyle)
The strange part is that Julian grew up almost completely unimpressed by the phenomenon surrounding his mother.
For everyone else, Lisa Kudrow was Phoebe.
For him, she was simply Mom.

Lisa returned to the Emmys after seven years — and chose Julian as her date
The evening carried considerably more significance for Kudrow than the viral photograph suggests.
At 63, she was returning to the Emmy red carpet for the first time since 2019. (E! Online)
And she wasn’t there simply as a beloved former Friends star.
Kudrow had received two nominations for The Comeback: Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for playing Valerie Cherish and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series. The Television Academy lists the 2026 installment as the show’s third season, arriving more than two decades after Kudrow first created Valerie. (Television Academy)
Kudrow wore a floor-length black Celine gown with a voluminous skirt and an extremely cropped tuxedo-style jacket. Her blonde hair fell into a polished lob, and she kept her jewelry remarkably minimal.
Julian coordinated with her in a traditional black suit, white shirt and black tie. (Harper’s BAZAAR)
There was nothing accidental about the pairing.
Lisa brought her son as her date.
So what was the “strange detail” people noticed?
Mostly, it came down to photographs.
In some images taken inside the ceremony, including the one used in the viral graphic, Kudrow and Julian aren’t behaving like people posing for a family portrait. They’re standing beside one another, facing the action in front of them. Julian’s mouth is open in one frame, while Lisa is looking ahead with a neutral expression.
Freeze that fraction of a second and add a provocative caption, and suddenly ordinary behavior can look mysterious.
But there is no reliable reporting indicating that something was wrong between them at the Emmys.
Quite the opposite.
Harper’s Bazaar reported that Kudrow smiled for photographs with Julian on the carpet. PEOPLE described him as her special date for the night. InStyle noted that their coordinating black outfits created a deliberate mother-son fashion moment. (Harper’s BAZAAR)
And after the ceremony, they were photographed together again at HBO Max’s Emmy celebration. (People.com)
A candid photograph captured between those moments simply doesn’t establish a hidden tension.
Their relationship actually produced one of the funniest stories from The Comeback
If anything, Lisa recently had the opposite problem with Julian.
She became too comfortable around him.
Julian joined the third and final season of The Comeback, playing Evan, a tech expert involved with an AI-written sitcom. It marked a remarkable full-circle moment: the child Kudrow carried while filming Friends was now acting professionally with her on a Warner Bros. soundstage. (TV Insider)
And during production, Kudrow briefly forgot that everyone around them didn’t necessarily know they were mother and son.
She has recalled sitting beside Julian and instinctively becoming physically affectionate with him — behaving exactly as she might privately with her child.
Some crew members apparently looked confused.
From their perspective, Lisa Kudrow had suddenly become extremely cuddly with a much younger male co-star.
Then someone had to explain the obvious missing piece:
That’s her son. (InStyle)
It’s a wonderfully mundane story about two people whose public photographs were later scrutinized for supposedly appearing distant.
Behind the cameras, Lisa apparently had to remind herself not to behave so much like Julian’s mom.
Julian admitted he was nervous about acting with her
For Julian, working with his mother came with another complication.
Lisa Kudrow isn’t simply his mother.
She’s Lisa Kudrow.
Julian graduated from the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts with a degree in film and television production and has worked behind the camera as well as pursuing acting. (InStyle)
But stepping onto his mother’s show was intimidating.
He acknowledged being nervous before filming with her, although the experience ultimately became something he described as a “genuine dream come true.” (InStyle)
What surprised him was how easily Mom disappeared once the cameras started.
Julian said Kudrow’s transformation into Valerie Cherish was so complete that he could separate the character standing opposite him from his mother.
That observation probably means more coming from him than it would from almost any critic.
He’s known Lisa his entire life.
And yet when she became Valerie, even her own son saw someone else.

Julian spent part of his childhood on the Friends set
Long before he understood what his mother did professionally, Julian was already wandering through one of television’s most famous workplaces.
He visited the Friends set as a little boy.
For viewers, Stage 24 at Warner Bros. contained Central Perk, Monica’s apartment and a fictional version of Manhattan that became almost impossibly familiar.
For Julian, it was simply somewhere his mother worked.
He has remembered playing around the sets and becoming interested in what happened behind the cameras. Those early experiences helped lead him toward filmmaking. (TV Insider)
But one person on the set apparently confused him.
Jennifer Aniston.
As a child, Julian became so attached to Jennifer Aniston that Lisa noticed
Kudrow has told an especially funny story about Julian’s relationship with her Friends co-star.
When he was very young, he adored Jennifer Aniston.
A lot.
Kudrow has recalled that whenever Aniston was nearby, little Julian would climb into her lap. At one point, his attachment was strong enough that Kudrow joked that he seemed to think Jennifer was his mother. The story has become one of Kudrow’s favorite examples of how unusual it was for Julian to grow up surrounded by the Friends cast. (InStyle)
To Julian, these weren’t six globally famous sitcom actors.
They were adults he had known since childhood.
That may also help explain why celebrity itself never seemed particularly fascinating to him.
For years, Julian wasn’t even especially interested in Friends
Imagine having access to one of the biggest television shows ever made and essentially deciding:
I’ll watch it later.
That was Julian.
Kudrow revealed earlier this year that her son had not been particularly interested in watching Friends while growing up. Eventually, he began watching more of it because his friends constantly talked about the show. (TVA Nouvelles)
It is another reminder of how different his experience was from everyone else’s.
Fans might have wanted to ask Lisa about “Smelly Cat,” Ross yelling “Pivot!” or Phoebe discovering Monica and Chandler.
Julian had breakfast with her.
The mythology disappears when the celebrity is the person reminding you to do ordinary things at home.
Even Lisa’s Emmy once looked like a toy to him
Julian’s childhood understanding of his mother’s fame produced another wonderfully innocent detail.
Kudrow won her first Primetime Emmy in 1998 for playing Phoebe Buffay, the same year Julian was born.
As he grew older, he didn’t initially understand the cultural importance attached to the gold statuette sitting in his home.
To him, it looked like an extremely impressive action figure.
He has recalled thinking his mother’s Emmy was basically the coolest toy imaginable. (스타뉴스)
Twenty-eight years later, he was sitting beside her at the ceremony while she competed for two more.
That is a rather extraordinary arc.
The baby connected to a Friends storyline grew into a filmmaker and actor, appeared in his mother’s other signature comedy and eventually accompanied her back to the Emmys.
Lisa deliberately kept motherhood separate from her public persona
Part of the reason Julian still feels mysterious to many fans is that Kudrow never built her celebrity identity around him.
She has been married to Michel Stern since 1995, and Julian remains their only child. The Television Academy’s biography of Kudrow even notes that her real-life pregnancy was incorporated into Friends. (Television Academy)
But the family maintained a comparatively low profile.
There were occasional photographs as Julian grew up, but he wasn’t constantly brought to premieres or positioned as a celebrity child.
That makes his recent appearances feel far more dramatic than they actually are.
People remember a little boy.
Then they don’t see him for years.
Suddenly he’s 28, wearing a suit beside Lisa at the Emmys.
The years in between happened privately.

2026 has changed that privacy somewhat
Julian has actually appeared publicly with his mother more than once this year.
In March, he joined Kudrow and Michel Stern at the Los Angeles premiere of The Comeback‘s final season. At the time Julian was 27, and the family posed together on the carpet. (Yahoo)
Then came interviews about his role.
Then the Emmys.
It would be easy to interpret this as Julian suddenly embracing celebrity, but his professional circumstances provide a simpler explanation.
He is now part of the entertainment industry himself.
And for the first time, he and Lisa have a project they can publicly discuss together.
That naturally creates more photographs.
The Comeback made the night especially meaningful
Kudrow’s relationship with The Comeback is very different from her relationship with Friends.
Friends turned her into a superstar, but The Comeback is something she helped create.
Kudrow co-created the series with Michael Patrick King and has served as a writer and executive producer in addition to playing Valerie Cherish. (Television Academy)
The first season premiered in 2005.
The second arrived in 2014.
Then audiences waited more than another decade for the third.
By the time the final season arrived in 2026, the television landscape Valerie Cherish had been created to parody had transformed almost beyond recognition.
Social media existed everywhere.
Streaming dominated.
Reality television had changed.
Artificial intelligence had entered entertainment.
And Julian — who had been a small child when The Comeback first premiered — was now old enough to join its cast.
That gave Kudrow’s Emmy return a strangely circular quality.
She didn’t win — but she didn’t leave alone either

But there is something almost more memorable about the photograph she took home from the evening.
Not Lisa Kudrow with another trophy.
Lisa Kudrow with Julian.
He had been born during Friends.
He had played with her Emmy like an action figure.
He had wandered around television sets as a child.
He had grown up largely away from cameras.
He went to film school.
Then, nearly three decades after his mother became one of television’s most famous women, he walked onto one of those sets as an actor himself.
And eventually he sat beside her at the Emmys.
The “strange behavior” looks very ordinary when you see the full picture
The viral image succeeds because it isolates one moment.
Lisa looks forward.
Julian appears to be reacting to something elsewhere.
They aren’t hugging.
They aren’t smiling at one another.
Put the words “fans spotted a strange detail” beneath that photograph and suddenly the viewer begins searching for something wrong.
But the documented story surrounding that picture doesn’t support a mother-son rift or an uncomfortable evening.
They arrived together.
They coordinated their clothes.
They posed together.
They watched the ceremony together.
They attended an after-party.
And only months earlier, Julian had described working beside Lisa as a dream come true. (InStyle)
Perhaps the genuinely unusual thing isn’t how they behaved.
It’s how rarely audiences get to see them together.
For decades, Lisa Kudrow kept the most famous part of her life and the most personal part of her life largely separate.
At the 2026 Emmys, those worlds finally overlapped.
Phoebe Buffay’s millions of fans looked at the woman they had watched since the 1990s and saw the 63-year-old actress sitting beside a 28-year-old man.
But Lisa wasn’t sitting beside a mysterious young celebrity.
She was sitting beside the baby she carried while filming Friends, the little boy who once treated her Emmy like a toy, and now the actor who had just become her co-star. (InStyle)
