The incident unfolded at approximately 12:30 a.m. near Westlake Boulevard and Townsgate Road.
According to authorities, deputies encountered a vehicle stopped at an intersection despite the traffic light being green. The car was blocking traffic, and deputies approached to determine what was happening.
The driver appeared intoxicated to deputies, according to the sheriff’s department, prompting a DUI investigation. Thomas was sitting in the passenger seat. NBC Los Angeles
What happened next turned the otherwise routine traffic investigation into a much more serious encounter.
Authorities allege that Thomas appeared intoxicated and repeatedly got out of the vehicle and approached deputies while they were conducting sobriety tests on the driver. Deputies said his actions were interfering with their investigation. ABC7 Los Angeles
Police allege the encounter became physical
The sheriff’s department says deputies eventually attempted to detain Thomas for obstruction and public intoxication.
At that point, authorities allege Thomas kicked a deputy in the stomach. He was subsequently taken into custody and transported to the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station. NBC Los Angeles

There is an important distinction in the developing story: as of September 24, no criminal charges had been filed against Thomas. Authorities said the case would be submitted to prosecutors for consideration. The circumstances feel especially unexpected because Thomas has spent so many years deliberately staying away from celebrity culture.
Born Jonathan Taylor Weiss, he became famous as a child and landed the role that would define his early career when Home Improvement premiered in 1991.
Alongside Tim Allen, Patricia Richardson, Zachery Ty Bryan and Taran Noah Smith, Thomas grew up before an enormous television audience.
Randy Taylor wasn’t his only famous role, either.

Only months before this incident, Thomas resurfaced publicly in considerably happier circumstances.
