For millions of people, Olivia Newton-John’s greatest love story will always begin with John Travolta.
It is almost impossible to watch Grease without wondering whether some part of Sandy and Danny’s chemistry followed the actors home when the cameras stopped rolling. They looked at each other with an ease that seemed difficult to manufacture, and nearly five decades later, people are still asking the same question:
Were Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta secretly in love?
The answer is more complicated — and considerably more interesting — than a simple yes or no.
Newton-John acknowledged that there was genuine attraction between them, but both maintained that they never became a couple. “We were both with other people when we were filming,” she later explained. The decision not to cross that boundary may have helped preserve a friendship that lasted until her death. Smooth
And Travolta was only one chapter in a romantic life filled with extraordinary turns: a marriage to a man more than a decade younger, the birth of her only child, a painful divorce, a longtime boyfriend who vanished at sea, and finally a husband who remained beside her during the last years of her long experience with breast cancer.
The chemistry with John Travolta was real
When Grease was filmed, Newton-John was 28 and Travolta was 23.
Their characters were supposed to fall hopelessly in love, and audiences believed every second of it.
Years afterward, Newton-John admitted there really had been attraction between them. She wrote that they “really liked each other,” but said they wouldn’t date because each was involved with somebody else and both took loyalty seriously. Fox News
In 2018, she offered another explanation.
Perhaps never becoming lovers was actually what made Sandy and Danny work so well.
The unresolved attraction remained there, she suggested, rather than becoming an ordinary relationship that might eventually end badly. Smooth
Travolta acknowledged the tension too.
Yet the relationship they ultimately built proved much more durable than most Hollywood romances.
They remained close friends for more than 40 years. ABC News
New claims have reignited the old Travolta question
In 2026, however, the story received an intriguing new chapter.
Matthew Hild’s biography A Little More Love: The Life and Legacy of Olivia Newton-John revisited the relationship and reported accounts suggesting Newton-John and Travolta may at one point have come closer to romance than previously understood.
The book describes Newton-John asking a musician who had been married to a Scientologist about Travolta’s religion and what marrying someone within Scientology might entail. The account has fueled speculation that she once seriously considered whether a relationship with Travolta could work. People.com
That doesn’t establish that they secretly dated.
Their own public accounts remained clear: they were attracted to each other, but they did not become a couple.
And perhaps that was exactly why their connection survived for so long.
Then Olivia fell for a dancer 11 years younger
A very different romance began on the set of Xanadu.
Matt Lattanzi was a young dancer and actor who appeared in the 1980 musical fantasy. Newton-John was already an international superstar.
He was also 11 years younger.
Their relationship developed during production, and contemporary accounts later described Lattanzi secretly spending nights with Newton-John before filming had even finished. AOL.com
They married in 1984.
Two years later, Olivia experienced something she would later describe as transformative: motherhood.
Their daughter, Chloe Rose Lattanzi, was born in January 1986.
Newton-John once said becoming a mother changed her “in the best of ways,” because suddenly another human being mattered more than she did. The Guardian
Their age difference was always somewhere in Olivia’s mind
For a time, the marriage worked.
But Newton-John later admitted she’d quietly wondered whether their 11-year age difference might eventually matter.
She recalled having a sense that Lattanzi could reach a stage in his life where he wanted to explore something different. She didn’t want the marriage to end, but in retrospect she acknowledged that she’d understood the possibility. AOL.com
The couple separated in the mid-1990s after roughly a decade of marriage.
It was an especially complicated period because Newton-John had already confronted another life-changing event.
In 1992, she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Lattanzi was still her husband then and later described how frightened he had been for her during the ordeal. AOL.com
Their marriage ultimately ended, but they remained permanently connected through Chloe.
Then Newton-John fell in love again.
Patrick McDermott simply vanished
Her relationship with cameraman Patrick McDermott began in the 1990s.
Unlike the highly publicized Grease fantasy or her marriage to Lattanzi, Newton-John generally kept this romance relatively private.
They were together for years.
In a 2004 interview, she described their relationship as “lovely” while explaining that she still valued her independence. onlyolivia.com
Then came one of the strangest episodes of her life.
In June 2005, McDermott went on an overnight fishing trip off the California coast.
He never returned.
His disappearance initially went unnoticed because the boat returned safely and he wasn’t immediately reported missing. Investigators later concluded that he was most likely lost at sea. Biography
But the mystery didn’t end there.
Rumors claimed he was still alive
Over the following years, extraordinary stories appeared claiming McDermott had deliberately disappeared and was living in Mexico.
Sightings were reported.
Private investigators became involved.
Tabloids repeatedly revived the story.
None of those theories produced conclusive proof that McDermott had intentionally vanished, and the U.S. Coast Guard’s investigation concluded that he had most likely been lost at sea. onlyolivia.com
For Newton-John, the endless speculation made an already painful situation stranger.
There was no conventional breakup.
No funeral providing a definitive emotional endpoint.
The man she’d loved had simply gone out on a boat and disappeared.
Eventually, however, another man entered her life.
And this relationship would last until the end.
John Easterling had actually known Olivia for years
John Easterling wasn’t originally a romantic partner.
The businessman, known for his work involving Amazonian botanicals, met Newton-John through mutual friends.
According to Easterling, they remained platonic friends for approximately 12 years and usually encountered one another at charity events. Yahoo
Then something changed.
Newton-John invited him to one of her concerts in Miami.
Easterling later recalled that hearing her perform affected him profoundly and helped him recognize a deeper connection between them. Yahoo
Their friendship became romantic.
In June 2008, the couple married in a private spiritual ceremony in Peru, followed by a legal ceremony in Florida. Biography
Newton-John had found her final partner.
Then cancer returned
Newton-John’s first breast-cancer diagnosis had come in 1992.
She underwent treatment and became an increasingly prominent advocate for cancer research and wellness.
But decades later, the disease returned.
By 2017, she publicly revealed that breast cancer had metastasized to her sacrum. She underwent treatment while continuing to speak openly about her approach to living with the illness.
Easterling remained beside her.
Their shared interest in plant-based wellness became part of their home life, while Newton-John also continued receiving conventional cancer treatment and became closely associated with the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre in Melbourne. Biography
This wasn’t a brief illness.
By the time she died, Newton-John’s experience with breast cancer had stretched across approximately three decades from her first diagnosis.
Travolta never disappeared from her life either
One of the most touching aspects of Newton-John’s story is that marrying other people never erased the friendship she had formed with Travolta.
During her later cancer experience, he checked on her.
Newton-John said he called, came to see her perform and offered suggestions when he learned she was struggling physically. Smooth
They reunited publicly many times.
They celebrated anniversaries of Grease.
They sang together again.
And they continued speaking about each other with enormous affection.
In 2012, Newton-John described Travolta simply as one of the lifelong friendships Grease had given her. The Guardian
Forty years after Sandy and Danny drove away together, Olivia and John were still part of each other’s lives.
Just not in the way audiences had imagined.
Her final years belonged to John Easterling
Newton-John died on August 8, 2022, at age 73.
Easterling announced that she had died peacefully at her ranch in Southern California surrounded by family and friends.
In his tribute, he described her as a symbol of “triumphs and hope” after sharing her cancer journey for more than 30 years. onlyolivia.com
Travolta’s goodbye was equally emotional.
“My dearest Olivia, you made all of our lives so much better,” he wrote, ending his tribute with words that instantly transported millions back to Grease: “Your Danny, your John!” ABC News
The man audiences had spent decades imagining as Olivia’s great romance was grieving his lifelong friend.
The man she had actually married was grieving his wife.
The rare photos reveal several completely different chapters
Looking through the RARE PHOTOS of Olivia Newton-John’s relationships, there isn’t one straightforward Hollywood love story.
There is young Olivia at the height of her fame.
There is Travolta beside her during the Grease phenomenon, when the chemistry was real but the romance remained on-screen.
There is Matt Lattanzi, the much-younger dancer who became her husband and the father of her only daughter.
There is Patrick McDermott, whose disappearance created a mystery that followed Newton-John for years.
And finally there is John Easterling, first her friend and eventually the husband who shared the last chapter of her life.
None fits neatly into the fairy-tale narrative audiences sometimes wanted for her.
Perhaps that’s what makes the real story more compelling.
Olivia Newton-John experienced attraction that never became romance, a marriage that didn’t last, a love that ended without answers and another relationship that began as friendship and endured through her final years.
And through almost all of it, somewhere in the background remained the man who had once played Danny Zuko.
Not her secret husband.
Not the lover fans spent decades imagining.
Just John Travolta — the friend she met while making Grease and never really lost.
