At 108 years old, people often ask me what my secret is. Was it good genes? Staying active? Avoiding stress? All of those things helped, I am sure. But when I look back on my long life, I notice that the foods I ate day after day, year after year, made the biggest difference. Here are the seven foods that have kept me going strong for over a century.
1. Leafy Greens
I ate spinach, kale, and Swiss chard almost every day. These greens are packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that support your heart, bones, and brain. I grew them in my garden and added them to soups, salads, and omelets.
2. Berries
Blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries were my favorite treats. They are full of antioxidants that protect your cells from damage and help keep your mind sharp. I ate them fresh in summer and frozen in winter.
3. Nuts and Seeds
A handful of almonds, walnuts, or pumpkin seeds was my daily snack. They are rich in healthy fats, protein, and magnesium, which support your heart and muscles. I never ate processed snacks—just nuts and seeds.
4. Fatty Fish
Salmon, sardines, and mackerel were regulars on my plate. They are full of omega-3 fatty acids, which reduce inflammation and support your brain and heart. I ate fish at least twice a week, sometimes more.
5. Beans and Lentils
Beans and lentils were a staple in my kitchen. They are packed with fiber, protein, and nutrients that keep your digestion healthy and your blood sugar stable. I made soups, stews, and salads with them.
6. Olive Oil
I used olive oil every day, on salads, vegetables, and for cooking. It is rich in healthy fats and antioxidants that protect your heart and reduce inflammation. I never used margarine or processed oils.
7. Fermented Foods
Yogurt, sauerkraut, and kimchi were part of my diet. These foods are full of probiotics that support your gut health, which is connected to your immune system, mood, and overall well-being.
How I Ate Them
I kept things simple. I ate whole foods, not processed ones. I cooked at home. I ate slowly and enjoyed my meals. I never followed fad diets or counted calories. I just ate real food, in moderation, every day.
A Gentle Reminder
There is no single magic food that guarantees a long life. But eating a variety of whole, natural foods, day after day, year after year, gives your body the best chance to thrive. I am living proof that simple, consistent habits can lead to a long, healthy, and happy life.
