Do This to Clean Your Ears the Right Way

Daniel Foster

Your ears are remarkable, self-cleaning organs. Most of the time, they do not need any special attention. Earwax, or cerumen, is a natural substance that protects your ear canal from dust, debris, and bacteria. It gradually moves outward on its own, carrying away particles and old skin cells. However, many people have habits that can disrupt this natural process and even cause harm.

The Most Common Mistake: Cotton Swabs

Inserting cotton swabs into your ear canal is the most common and most harmful ear cleaning mistake. Swabs often push wax deeper into the canal rather than removing it. This can cause impaction, which can lead to discomfort, hearing loss, and even infection. The rule is simple: never insert anything smaller than your elbow into your ear.

The Right Way to Clean Your Ears

For the Outer Ear

The only part of your ear that needs regular cleaning is the outer ear, called the pinna. Wash it gently with a warm, soapy washcloth during your shower or bath. You can also clean the entrance of the ear canal with a damp washcloth, but do not push the cloth inside the canal.

For Excess Wax (Rarely Needed)

If you feel that you have excess earwax that is causing discomfort or affecting your hearing, the safest method is to use over-the-counter ear drops that soften wax. Follow the instructions on the bottle. You can also place a few drops of warm mineral oil or olive oil in your ear, tilt your head to let it sit for a few minutes, then tilt your head the other way to let the oil and softened wax drain out. Always use clean oils and consult a doctor before doing this if you have any history of ear problems.

When to See a Doctor

  • If you have ear pain
  • If you have sudden hearing loss
  • If you have a feeling of fullness or blockage that does not resolve on its own
  • If you have discharge from your ear
  • If you have tinnitus (ringing in the ears)

A doctor can safely examine your ears and, if necessary, remove impacted wax using professional tools.

A Kind Reminder

Your ears are designed to clean themselves. Most people never need to actively clean their ear canals. The best practice is gentle washing of the outer ear with a washcloth and leaving the rest to nature. A simple, hands-off approach is the most effective way to support your ear health.
