The first time I saw someone squeeze toothpaste into a pot of very hot water, I genuinely wondered what problem they were trying to solve.
Toothpaste belongs on a toothbrush. Hot water belongs in tea, coffee, and cleaning buckets. Putting the two together sounds like one of those internet tricks invented purely to get people to stop scrolling.

But there is a reason toothpaste can clean more than teeth.

2. Warm Water Helps With Greasy Residue
Hot water doesn’t magically activate toothpaste.
What it does particularly well is soften certain greasy residues.
Combine warmth with the surfactants present in many toothpastes and you have a mixture capable of loosening some everyday grime.
That’s why the trick can seem dramatically more effective than simply rubbing dry toothpaste onto a cold dirty surface.
3. Stainless-Steel Sinks Can Look Surprisingly Fresh
One of my favorite places to use a tiny amount of toothpaste is a compatible stainless-steel sink.
Wet the sink first.
Put a pea-sized amount of toothpaste onto a damp soft sponge and gently work with the grain of the steel.
Then rinse extremely well and dry everything with a microfiber cloth.
That final drying step makes an enormous difference because dried water droplets themselves can leave the sink looking spotted.
4. Toothpaste Can Help With Mug Stains
Coffee and tea gradually leave brown staining inside light-colored mugs.
A little ordinary white toothpaste on a damp cloth can provide gentle mechanical polishing.
Rub lightly, then wash the mug normally with dish detergent and rinse thoroughly.
Because you’re dealing with something used for drinking, don’t simply wipe away the toothpaste and immediately refill the cup.
Wash it properly afterward.
5. Some White Sneaker Soles Respond Beautifully
This is probably one of toothpaste’s most satisfying non-dental uses.
Apply a small amount of white toothpaste to the rubber portion of a sneaker and work it gently with an old toothbrush.
Allow it to sit briefly, then wipe it away with a damp cloth.
The mild abrasives can help remove superficial dirt that makes white rubber look gray.
Test a hidden spot first and keep it away from delicate leather, suede, dyed fabrics, and specialty finishes.
6. Bathroom Fixtures Can Benefit From Gentle Polishing
Small amounts of toothpaste can sometimes help remove ordinary residue from compatible chrome fixtures.
Use a soft damp cloth rather than an aggressive scrubber.
Then rinse and dry.
The goal is polishing—not grinding away at the finish.
If you’re dealing with heavy mineral scale, however, toothpaste isn’t necessarily the best chemistry for the job. A cleaner specifically approved for the fixture will usually be more effective.
7. It Can Help With Certain Crayon Marks
This old trick actually makes some sense because you’re combining mild abrasion with surfactants.
Put a tiny amount of toothpaste on a damp microfiber cloth and test an inconspicuous area first.
Gently work over the mark.
Paint finishes vary enormously, so stop immediately if you see paint transferring onto the cloth or the surface becoming dull.
I’d rather live with one crayon line than accidentally polish a shiny bald patch into the wall.
8. Toothpaste Can Freshen Certain Plastic Items
Light-colored hard plastics sometimes develop superficial grime that normal wiping doesn’t completely remove.
A tiny amount of white toothpaste can provide additional mechanical cleaning.
Again, test first.
Glossy, coated, transparent, or easily scratched plastics may become hazy when treated with abrasive products.
This isn’t a universal plastic cleaner.
9. It Can Help Clean the Rubber Around Some Appliances
Grime tends to collect around handles, edges, and other frequently touched areas.
For a durable compatible surface, diluted toothpaste applied with a cloth can help loosen residue.
But toothpaste shouldn’t be pushed into electrical openings, switches, seams, vents, or internal appliance components.
Use very little moisture and wipe away all residue afterward.
10. One Tiny Detail Explains the “Wow” Effect
People often attribute the cleaning result to some mysterious chemical reaction between toothpaste and boiling water.
There really isn’t one dramatic reaction occurring.
The effect is much simpler.
Warm water softens certain residues. Surfactants help loosen oily material. Mild abrasives provide mechanical cleaning.
Three ordinary actions happening simultaneously can produce a result that looks surprisingly impressive.
Sometimes internet hacks become less mysterious—and more useful—once you understand why they work.
11. Don’t Actually Boil Toothpaste on the Stove
This is the part of the viral trick I’d change completely.
There’s little benefit to continuously boiling toothpaste.
You can create splashes, foam, unnecessary fumes from flavorings and other ingredients, and a saucepan you’ll then have to clean.
Instead, heat plain water and remove it from the heat.
Allow it to cool until comfortably hot for cleaning.
Then mix in the toothpaste.
You get the practical cleaning effect without turning your kitchen into an experimental chemistry department.
12. Never Mix It With Random Cleaning Chemicals
Once people discover a homemade cleaner, the temptation is to keep adding things.
Toothpaste.
Vinegar.
Bleach.
Ammonia.
Dish soap.
Whatever happens to be under the sink.
Don’t.
Especially avoid mixing chlorine bleach with acids or ammonia-containing products, because dangerous gases can be produced.
A cleaning mixture doesn’t become better simply because it contains more ingredients.
My 5-Minute Toothpaste Cleaning Mixture
Here’s the version I’d actually use.
You’ll need 2 cups warm water, 1 teaspoon plain white toothpaste, ½ teaspoon ordinary dishwashing liquid, and a clean microfiber cloth.
Pour the warm water into a bowl.
Add the toothpaste and stir until it is mostly dispersed.
Then add the dishwashing liquid and stir gently rather than whipping it into foam.
Dip the microfiber cloth into the mixture and wring it out extremely well.
Use it on a small test area of a durable, washable surface.
Once you’ve loosened the grime, wipe the area again with a separate cloth dampened only with clean water.
Then dry it.
That last rinse matters because toothpaste can leave a chalky film if too much is used.
For Really Stubborn Marks, Don’t Dilute It
Sometimes the opposite method works better.
Put a pea-sized amount of toothpaste directly onto a damp microfiber cloth and gently polish a small stained area.
This concentrates the abrasive action exactly where you need it.
Then rinse and dry.
I’d choose this approach for things such as stained mug interiors or compatible white rubber rather than making an entire bowl of cleaning solution.
Where I Would NOT Use Toothpaste
Despite what some viral videos suggest, toothpaste isn’t suitable for everything.
Avoid experimenting with it on phone and television screens, eyeglass lenses, camera lenses, polished natural stone, delicate jewelry, car paint, acrylic surfaces, specialty coatings, or anything whose finish scratches easily.
Those mild abrasives that make toothpaste useful can also be exactly what damages a delicate surface.
And despite another popular internet trick, I wouldn’t use toothpaste to “repair” scratches on a phone screen. Polishing a coating isn’t the same thing as repairing glass.
And Keep the Toothpaste for Its Most Important Job
The funny thing about these cleaning tricks is that they can make us forget what toothpaste is actually exceptionally good at doing.
Used properly with a toothbrush, fluoride toothpaste helps prevent tooth decay, while brushing physically removes plaque from tooth surfaces.
That’s considerably more valuable than making a sneaker look whiter.
So don’t sacrifice your last tube to the kitchen sink.
The Bottom Line
Adding toothpaste to hot water doesn’t create a miraculous new chemical capable of cleaning your entire home.
But there’s a genuinely useful idea hiding behind the viral trick.
Many toothpastes combine mild abrasives with surfactants, while warm water helps soften and loosen everyday residue.
Used carefully, that combination can help freshen certain stainless-steel surfaces, mugs, white rubber, fixtures, and other durable washable materials.
Skip the actual boiling. Use a tiny amount. Test delicate surfaces first. Rinse thoroughly afterward.
And once you understand what’s actually doing the cleaning, the trick becomes much more interesting.
That little tube beside your toothbrush was a mild polishing cleaner all along—you’d just never thought to use it anywhere else.
