For years, millions of viewers thought they knew the Gosselin family.
On Jon & Kate Plus 8, cameras followed Jon and Kate Gosselin as they raised twins Cara and Mady and sextuplets Alexis, Hannah, Aaden, Collin, Leah and Joel. The children grew up in front of an enormous television audience, their birthdays, vacations and ordinary family moments turned into entertainment.
But Collin Gosselin, now 22, says there was another story unfolding when the cameras weren’t rolling.
And this fall, he plans to tell it himself.
Collin’s memoir, In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood, is scheduled for release on October 13, 2026. He says the book will explore his childhood, his years on reality television and his deeply fractured relationship with his mother. Us
Just weeks before its release, Collin was asked what he would say to Kate if she watched him on his latest television project.
His answer was brief.
“Hey, Mom! Hope you enjoy.”
The comment was delivered with a laugh, but it arrives amid years of very serious allegations and an estrangement that appears far from resolved. Page Six
The five words came before a much bigger revelation
The comment surfaced as Collin promoted Season 5 of Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test.
There’s an unusual family connection to the program: Kate competed during its first season in 2023 but left after being medically withdrawn following an injury.
Collin told Us Weekly that there had once been a part of him that wanted to prove his mother wrong after what he says happened during his childhood. But he says his motivation eventually changed.
His appearance on Special Forces, he explained, became something he wanted to do for himself rather than for Kate. Us
That distinction seems important to Collin now.
After years in which his relationship with his mother dominated much of the public discussion around him, he says he wants his adult life to belong to him.
But his upcoming memoir will inevitably return to the childhood at the center of their estrangement.
“What was actually happening… was never shown”
When announcing his memoir earlier this year, Collin described a striking contradiction.
His childhood was extraordinarily public, yet he believes viewers saw only a carefully selected portion of it.
“My life was always broadcast to millions,” he told Us Weekly, before saying that much of what was actually happening remained hidden. He described the book as an opportunity to finally tell his story in his own words. Us
The title itself — In the Shadow of Eight — references growing up as one of eight siblings inside a family whose everyday life had become a television franchise.
Collin says the book will focus on survival, resilience and finding his voice after years when other people publicly defined his story. Us
Collin has made serious allegations about his childhood
Over the past several years, Collin has accused Kate of abusive treatment when he was young.
Among his most serious allegations, he has claimed that his mother physically restrained him and isolated him in a basement room. He has also discussed being sent to a residential facility when he was 11. Access
These are Collin’s allegations, not independently established findings.
Kate has disputed the characterization of events. In a 2023 public statement, she described Collin as having serious behavioral and psychiatric problems and said decisions surrounding his treatment were made because of safety concerns. Collin has challenged that account. TV Insider
That fundamental disagreement — over what happened and why — remains at the center of their estrangement.
He remembers beginning to question everything
Collin has said the conflict intensified as he became old enough to challenge his mother.
In an interview recorded in 2025 and published in full this summer, he said he began questioning Kate and eventually resisted being filmed.
“I was stubborn enough to question my mom,” he recalled.

Perhaps one of the saddest consequences is that the conflict didn’t remain between mother and son.
Collin has said he is estranged from most of his siblings.
He has remained connected to Hannah, but the once-inseparable group of sextuplets viewers watched growing up has become divided in adulthood. TV Insider
Collin has acknowledged that seeing Hannah maintain or rebuild connections within the family can be painful for him.
At the same time, he has expressed understanding about why she might want relationships with both sides.

He also has questions about the money
Collin says his memoir won’t focus exclusively on his relationship with Kate.
He has publicly questioned how money earned during the family’s years on television was handled.
Speaking in an interview released this summer, Collin said that now that he is an adult, he has been examining court documents himself and wants answers about money associated with the family’s television earnings and trusts. Us
Again, these are questions and allegations raised by Collin; they should not be treated as proof that funds were mishandled.
But they illustrate just how many aspects of his childhood he intends to revisit now that he can examine them as an adult.
Kate has responded to some of the renewed attention
The public dispute has not been entirely one-sided.
When followers raised Collin’s claims with Kate on social media this summer, she responded to some of the comments, including discussion surrounding his challenge for the two of them to take lie-detector tests.
Collin had publicly invited his mother to participate in such a test. After receiving no public acceptance, he later wrote that he had been “stood up” again. Parade
The exchange demonstrated how far the relationship remains from reconciliation.
And with Collin’s memoir approaching, their conflicting accounts are receiving renewed scrutiny.
“I’m not the one that should be nervous”
Perhaps Collin’s most revealing recent statement wasn’t his joking message to Kate at all.
Asked whether he felt nervous about people reading his book, he replied:
“I’m not the one that should be nervous.”

That goal reflects something Collin has repeatedly emphasized: children appearing on reality television may be famous, but they don’t necessarily control how their lives are filmed, edited or presented.

There is an uncomfortable contrast between old photographs of Collin and the man speaking publicly today.
In those childhood images, he is one of six matching little faces lined up for family photographs.
Today, he’s 22 and publicly questioning what happened during those years.
He has returned to television through Special Forces, but this time as an adult who made the decision himself. And on October 13, he intends to take control of the larger story with a memoir told entirely from his perspective. Us
Whether Kate will respond to the book remains to be seen. Her previous statements make clear that her account of Collin’s childhood differs sharply from his.
For now, however, Collin’s message to his estranged mother is remarkably short compared with everything he says is coming:
“Hey, Mom! Hope you enjoy.”
