For years, some of the most tender photographs on Cindy Crawford’s social media had nothing to do with supermodel glamour.
They showed a little blond boy.
Presley Gerber, Cindy’s first child and only son, grew up alongside younger sister Kaia in a family that seemed almost impossibly photogenic. Childhood pictures captured him with shoulder-length blond hair, an enormous smile and the same distinctive features that would eventually lead him into modeling.
As an adult, however, Presley developed a dramatically different image.

Emergency responders were reportedly called after an apparent overdose and cardiac arrest, and Santa Monica police have said they found no indication of foul play. Until those results are complete, reports of an overdose describe the circumstances being investigated — not a final medical determination.

The photographs people are revisiting today span nearly three decades.

The red cross.
The word on his face.

But focusing exclusively on whether Presley looked “sad” in later photographs risks reading something into still images that they simply cannot tell us. A person’s mental state cannot reliably be determined from their expression in a photograph.
