For fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Willow Rosenberg and Wesley Wyndam-Pryce were never supposed to become a love story.
On screen, they belonged to completely different corners of Sunnydale.
But away from the cameras, something unexpected was quietly beginning between the actors who played them.

But Hannigan and Denisof had formed a connection behind the scenes.

By then, Buffy had just finished its seven-season run, while Denisof was still playing Wesley on Angel.

Years later, Denisof appeared on How I Met Your Mother, the sitcom that turned Hannigan into Lily Aldrin for nine seasons. He played the memorably obnoxious news anchor Sandy Rivers.
So even after Buffy, audiences occasionally got to see the real-life husband and wife occupying the same fictional universe again.
Then their family grew

In September 2026, Hannigan shared a rare photograph from an outing with 14-year-old Keeva.
Fans immediately noticed how much the teenager resembles her mother.
Some compared Keeva directly with the younger Hannigan they remembered as Willow on Buffy. Hannigan also revealed that her older daughter, Satyana, had created the custom manicure she wore for the outing, affectionately calling her the family’s “true artist.” People.com
Both daughters are now in high school — a remarkable full-circle moment considering that millions of viewers first came to know Hannigan when she was playing a teenager herself.
Alexis became the hands-on father Alyson could depend on
Hannigan has spoken particularly warmly about Denisof as a father.
While competing on Dancing With the Stars in 2023, she described how much he was doing behind the scenes so she could focus on the demanding competition.
She said he’d always been a hands-on dad and had made significant sacrifices for their family. During her exhausting rehearsal schedule, he cooked, cared for her and took care of things at home.
It’s a very different picture of Denisof from the uptight Wesley that Buffy viewers first met.
Ten years after the wedding, he proposed all over again
Their tenth anniversary produced one of the sweetest chapters in their story.
In 2013, Denisof surprised Hannigan with another proposal — complete with a new ring.
She said yes.

In October 2025, Hannigan celebrated 22 years of marriage to Denisof.
The accompanying photograph was refreshingly ordinary: no enormous red carpet, elaborate Hollywood styling or carefully staged anniversary portrait.
Just the two of them smiling together.
The image felt especially nostalgic because fans could remember them looking completely different when Denisof first appeared on Buffy.
Willow was still navigating Sunnydale High.
Wesley was the awkward new Watcher.
Meanwhile, the two actors portraying them were unknowingly at the beginning of something that would outlast both shows.
They even brought their relationship into “How I Met Your Mother”
Hannigan’s post-Buffy career exploded again when she landed the role of Lily Aldrin on How I Met Your Mother.
And eventually, Denisof followed her there too.
He appeared repeatedly as Sandy Rivers, the shameless and self-important television personality who worked alongside Robin Scherbatsky.
That meant Denisof became one of the unusual actors who appeared alongside his wife in two of the television franchises most closely associated with her career.

For their actual children, apparently, it’s a little more complicated.
Hannigan has spoken about carefully deciding when to show her daughters her older work. Like many children, they don’t necessarily want to watch their parents kissing other people on television.
So while millions of strangers can happily revisit Willow’s romances or Wesley’s increasingly complicated life on Angel, Alyson and Alexis’ daughters have had a rather different reaction to seeing Mom and Dad onscreen.
It’s one of those wonderfully mundane realities hidden behind a very famous Hollywood family.
And they’re still connected to the “Buffy” family
Hannigan has remained particularly close to Sarah Michelle Gellar.
