The first time I saw someone dropping cloves into a bottle of baby oil, I wondered what such a simple mixture could possibly do. One ingredient belonged in my spice cupboard, the other in the bathroom, yet together they create a wonderfully aromatic massage oil that has become one of my favorite little evening rituals.
Cloves contain aromatic plant compounds, especially eugenol, responsible for their unmistakable warm scent. Baby oil, meanwhile, creates a smooth layer over the skin that reduces moisture loss and makes massage effortless. Infusing the two produces an oil that smells warm and spicy while leaving the skin feeling remarkably soft.
The First Thing I Notice Happens Almost Immediately
Within the first minute of combining them, the experience begins with the fragrance. As the cloves become coated in oil, their familiar spicy aroma starts becoming part of the mixture.
The longer I leave the cloves in the oil, however, the more noticeable the infusion becomes. I don’t expect a one-minute transformation of the body—the real beauty of this recipe comes from allowing the cloves some time to infuse and then using a small amount as a massage oil.
Once ready, just a few drops spread easily over the skin.
My Skin Feels Incredibly Smooth
This is probably my favorite reason for using the mixture. Baby oil is usually based primarily on mineral oil, an effective occlusive ingredient. In simple terms, it creates a light barrier over the surface that helps keep water from escaping.
That is why I especially like using it after bathing. Instead of completely drying my skin, I leave it slightly damp and massage a little of the infused oil over my arms, legs or other dry areas.
The transformation in texture is immediate. Rough, dry-feeling skin becomes silky and glossy, and the moisture left from the shower is sealed underneath the oil.
It Makes a Wonderful Massage Ritual
Clove-infused oil also turns an ordinary massage into something much more enjoyable. I warm a few drops between my palms before slowly massaging my hands, feet or legs.
The oil provides plenty of slip, so there is no pulling at the skin. Meanwhile, the warm fragrance of cloves makes the ritual feel particularly comforting in the evening.
The massage itself is part of what makes the experience so pleasant. After spending the day moving around, taking several minutes to slowly massage my feet and legs feels wonderfully relaxing.
Dry Hands and Cuticles Love the Extra Moisture
I also discovered that I don’t need to cover my entire body with the mixture. Sometimes I use only a drop on my hands.
I massage it around my knuckles and especially around my cuticles, where dryness tends to become obvious first. Because the oil reduces moisture loss, my hands stay feeling softer for much longer than when I simply wash and dry them.
At night, I can leave that thin layer on while I sleep. By morning, my hands and cuticles feel beautifully conditioned.
My Clove and Baby Oil Recipe
I make a small batch rather than preparing an enormous bottle.
Ingredients:
- 100 ml plain baby oil
- 6–8 whole cloves
I place the cloves in a clean, dry glass container and pour the baby oil over them. Although the aroma begins appearing quickly, I prefer leaving the mixture covered for 24–48 hours so the cloves have time to infuse the oil.
Afterward, I strain out the cloves and keep the infused oil in a clean bottle. For each use, I need only a few drops. I warm them between my palms and massage a thin layer onto slightly damp skin.
Because cloves are naturally very aromatic, keeping the infusion mild is enough. For my first use, I try it on a small patch of skin and see how my skin likes the mixture before using it over a larger area.

Why I Keep Coming Back to This Simple Trick
What surprised me wasn’t some impossible overnight transformation. It was how two ordinary ingredients could turn into such an enjoyable body-care ritual.
The baby oil leaves my skin soft, smooth and protected from moisture loss, while the cloves give the mixture its distinctive warm aroma. Add a few minutes of gentle massage, and something that began as a curious kitchen-cupboard experiment becomes a relaxing little ritual I actually want to repeat.
Sometimes the simplest recipes are the ones that earn a permanent place on the bathroom shelf.
