You may not realize it, but your bedroom could be home to several items that emit low-level radiation. While the risks are still being studied, many experts suggest it’s wise to reduce exposure—especially while you sleep, when your body is resting and repairing. Here are five common bedroom items that may emit electromagnetic radiation, and what you can do about them.
1. Cell Phone
Keeping your phone on your nightstand—or worse, under your pillow—exposes you to radiofrequency radiation all night. Even on airplane mode, some phones still emit low-level signals.
Fix: Place your phone across the room, or turn it off completely while you sleep.
2. Wi-Fi Router
Many people keep their router in the bedroom for a strong signal. But routers emit constant radiofrequency radiation, even when you’re not using the internet.
Fix: Move the router to a hallway or living room. Or set it on a timer to turn off at night.
3. Electric Blanket or Heating Pad
Electric blankets generate low-frequency electromagnetic fields when plugged in. While the heat is comforting, the exposure continues all night.
Fix: Warm the bed before you get in, then unplug the blanket before sleeping. Or use a hot water bottle instead.
4. Clock Radio or Smart Speaker
This is the one most people overlook. Many clock radios and smart speakers are placed right on the nightstand, inches from your head. They emit both electric and magnetic fields, even when the display is dim.
Fix: Move the clock at least three feet away from your bed, or use a battery-operated alarm clock.
5. Lamp with a Dimmer Switch or LED Bulb
Some dimmer switches and certain LED bulbs can produce dirty electricity or high-frequency noise that radiates into the room.
Fix: Use simple on/off lamps, and choose incandescent or warm LED bulbs without dimmers. Keep lamps at least two feet from your bed.
What You Can Do Tonight
- Create a “tech-free zone” around your bed. Keep all electronics at least three feet away.
- Unplug devices that you’re not using. Even turned off, they can emit fields if plugged in.
- Use wired connections instead of Wi-Fi when possible, especially for computers.
A Gentle Reminder
This isn’t about fear—it’s about being informed. Our bodies are designed to rest in a low-electromagnetic environment. Making small changes to your bedroom can help you sleep more deeply and wake up feeling more refreshed. Start with one or two changes tonight, and see how you feel.
