3 Controversies That Had Everyone Talking After the 2026 MTV VMAs — From Madonna’s Provocative Comeback to a Tribute That Divided Viewers

The MTV Video Music Awards have never been designed to be quiet.

For more than four decades, the ceremony has built its reputation on unpredictable performances, revealing outfits, uncomfortable speeches and moments that people are still arguing about years later.

The 2026 MTV VMAs, held September 27 at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater, continued that tradition. Hosted by Snoop Dogg, the ceremony brought together generations of performers, from Taylor Swift and Madonna to Adam Lambert, RAYE, Sabrina Carpenter and Nirvana’s surviving members. But by the following morning, several moments were dominating the conversation for reasons that had little to do with who took home a Moon Person.

Here are three of the biggest.

1. Madonna returned after 23 years — and immediately reminded everyone why her VMA appearances cause a stir

Madonna didn’t quietly return to the VMAs.

At 68, she opened the entire ceremony, marking her first performance at the awards show since 2003. The Guardian

And she brought company.

Sabrina Carpenter joined her for “Bring Your Love,” while Charli XCX appeared during “Danceteria Afterhours.” The sprawling performance also included appearances from Julia Garner, Sombr, Debi Mazar, Seth Rogen and others. Pitchfork

The staging deliberately leaned into the provocative side of Madonna’s career, including choreography built around bathroom stalls and sinks. TheWrap described the performance as embracing the sensual style historically associated with the VMAs. TheWrap

It wasn’t exactly unexpected.

This is, after all, Madonna.

Her relationship with the VMAs stretches back to the very first ceremony in 1984, when her performance of “Like a Virgin” became one of the most famous — and controversial — awards-show performances ever televised.

Forty-two years later, she wasn’t interested in becoming restrained simply because she was now 68.

Then Madonna started talking

Her performances weren’t the only part of the evening that generated debate.

Madonna also won repeatedly.

That gave her several opportunities to address the audience.

And not everybody loved what followed.

Page Six characterized some of Madonna’s acceptance speeches as rambling, while other coverage viewed her appearances much more positively and emphasized the significance of seeing an artist from the inaugural VMAs dominating the ceremony more than four decades later. Page Six

It was a classic Madonna divide.

One audience saw an icon refusing to become invisible with age.

Another saw a performance and speeches that went too far.

But almost nobody ignored her.

Taylor Swift made history on the same night

Sitting in the audience was another woman with an enormous VMA history of her own.

Taylor Swift arrived at the ceremony as one of the year’s most nominated artists and ultimately won Video of the Year for “The Fate of Ophelia.”

She also received the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors, recognizing her work behind the camera. Paramount Press Express

Those wins pushed Swift past Beyoncé to become the most-awarded artist in VMA history. People.com

The night therefore created a fascinating generational picture.

Madonna — whose VMA history began in 1984 — was back onstage.

Taylor — whose own VMA history includes one of the most notorious interruptions in awards-show history — was sitting nearby making history of her own.

Photographs of the two women together became some of the evening’s most memorable images.

2. The George Michael tribute sounded incredible on paper

Later came another highly anticipated moment.

The VMAs assembled Sombr, RAYE, Teddy Swims and Adam Lambert for a tribute to George Michael, who died in 2016.

The song selection covered some of Michael’s most recognizable work.

Sombr performed “Faith” and “Father Figure.”

RAYE took on “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me).”

Teddy Swims performed “Careless Whisper.”

And Adam Lambert closed the medley with “Freedom! ’90.” ABC News

With that lineup, expectations were understandably enormous.

The reaction afterward wasn’t universally enthusiastic.

Critics couldn’t agree on whether the tribute worked

Pitchfork called the George Michael tribute “messy,” although its review specifically praised Lambert as the performer who ultimately brought energy to the segment. Pitchfork

Page Six was harsher, describing the tribute overall as lacking energy. Page Six

Yet other coverage focused on the emotional significance of the performance.

Before taking the stage, RAYE spoke about growing up with George Michael’s music and described participating in the tribute as an extraordinary opportunity to honor his legacy. ABC News

That contrast became one of the interesting arguments of the evening.

The performers themselves clearly approached the material with admiration.

Some critics simply weren’t convinced that putting four dramatically different singers into the same tribute produced a cohesive result.

Adam Lambert, however, emerged from much of that criticism comparatively well.

His enormous voice was particularly suited to “Freedom! ’90,” and even a critical Pitchfork assessment framed him as the performer who helped rescue the segment. Pitchfork

3. The VMAs themselves became part of the controversy

Perhaps the strangest controversy happened before Madonna sang a single note.

Millions of viewers turned on CBS expecting the VMAs.

They got football.

An NFL game between the Baltimore Ravens and Dallas Cowboys ran long, delaying the beginning of the awards ceremony by more than 20 minutes. The Irish Times

Social media immediately erupted.

For an awards show built around live spectacle — and one heavily promoting Madonna’s first VMA performance in 23 years — the delay was particularly awkward.

Yet something unexpected happened.

People kept watching.

Paramount reported that the ceremony ultimately attracted 8.43 million viewers, up 51% from the previous year’s broadcast and the VMAs’ largest audience since 2015. The audience peaked above 15 million during Madonna’s opening segment. Paramount Press Express

So the night that began with people complaining that they couldn’t watch the VMAs became the show’s biggest ratings success in more than a decade.

And then there was the larger argument: Have the VMAs lost their edge?

Not every controversy concerned a specific performer.

Some critics questioned the ceremony itself.

GQ argued that the show felt increasingly disconnected from contemporary pop culture, pointing to the heavy reliance on nostalgia and veteran performers. GQ

Pitchfork made a similar comparison with earlier ceremonies, remembering the era when Beyoncé could perform an extended Lemonade medley and Rihanna appeared repeatedly throughout a single broadcast. Pitchfork

Yet those criticisms existed alongside the ratings.

The 2026 VMAs were more watched than any edition in 11 years. Paramount Press Express

So perhaps the evening revealed something more complicated.

The VMAs may no longer define youth culture in quite the way they once did, but millions of people still wanted to see Madonna walk onto that stage again.

Madonna’s age inevitably became part of the reaction

At 68, Madonna was performing choreography beside artists decades younger than her.

For some viewers, that became part of the spectacle.

But Madonna has spent virtually her entire career resisting the idea that women should become less visible, less sexual or less ambitious as they grow older.

Her 2026 VMA appearance didn’t suddenly abandon that philosophy.

If anything, it amplified it.

She danced.

She wore revealing stage costumes.

She performed alongside Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX.

And then she spent the evening collecting awards.

The RARE PHOTOS from Madonna’s earliest VMA appearances compared with 2026 make the span of that career especially striking.

The night also contained genuinely emotional moments

The controversy shouldn’t obscure everything else.

Nirvana’s surviving members — Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear — received the Video Vanguard Award and used the moment to remember Kurt Cobain.

Novoselic spoke about Cobain’s artistic vision and the continuing impact of Nirvana’s music. Good Morning America

There was also a tribute to Dolly Parton, with Kacey Musgraves performing alongside archival footage of the late country legend. The Irish Times

And Taylor Swift ended one of her biggest VMA nights by acknowledging Parton’s influence.

Amid all the spectacle, those quieter moments landed differently.

In the end, Madonna did exactly what the VMAs once became famous for

The strangest thing about the criticism surrounding Madonna may be that controversy was once practically the job description.

The VMAs gave audiences Britney Spears with a python.

Lady Gaga covered in fake blood.

Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke.

And, decades earlier, Madonna rolling across the stage in a wedding dress.

The 2026 ceremony may have looked different from those eras, but its biggest star behaved as though nothing had changed.

She showed up.

She provoked.

She divided opinion.

She won seven awards.

And at 68, Madonna once again became one of the people everyone was discussing the morning after the VMAs. Paramount Press Express
